Briar Rose

Yolen, Jane
As a young woman, Becca is haunted by the words of her dying grandmother Gemma:"I am Briar Rose". As children, Becca and her sisters remember being fascinated by Gemma's repetition of this classic sleeping beauty fairy tale which turns out to have strong parallels in symbolism to Gemma's own life. Intrigued by the mystery of Gemma's origins and how she came as a war refugee to America, Becca researches Gemma's past and travels to Poland. There she meets Josef who she believes is her grandfather.
