Child of the Dream: A Memoir of 1963
The daughter of American baseball player Jackie Robinson, Sharon recounts a year in her life – 1963 – when she turns 13. Her memoir captures the life of a teenager who worries about the upcoming school dance while she observes her father, an activist working with Martin Luther King Jr., fight against segregation in schools and communities and discrimination against people of colour, and champion the equal rights of Black Americans. This timely coming-of-age story can be used as an independent novel and part of a literature circle to stimulate discussion of racism, segregation, the Underground Railroad, the civil rights movement, and the Jim Crow Laws.
