Friends with Boys

Hicks, E.E.
When Maggie’s mother abandons them, homeschooling ends and Maggie and her brothers must attend high school. Maggie is overwhelmed and lonely but befriends two untraditional siblings. She is also haunted by the ghost of a sea captain whose prosthetic hand is at the local museum and the three friends decide to steal it to set the ghost free, but they are caught by the chief of police – Maggie’s dad. Their misadventure brings Maggie, her friends, and brothers closer together. Suitable for a literature circle, whole-class novel, or classroom library, the graphic novel explores sibling relationships, acceptance, family dynamics, the complexities of friendship, and making amends.
