Just Juice

Hesse, Karen
This book gives a believable insider’s view of the poverty some families experience. At the same time, it affirms family values of caring for one other and working together. The book also illustrates the importance of being able to read. Juice is a spunky 10-year-old girl who’s part of a large, impoverished family. She struggles to learn to read and often skips school. Her father can’t read either and his avoidance of letters from the county makes them nearly lose their home due to unpaid taxes.
