Nibi's Water Song

Nibi, the Anishinaabemowin word for water, is an Indigenous girl in search of clean water as the water in her community is dirty. Highlighting the socio-economic divide between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities, “Nibi’s Water Song” is a bright and humorous story about one girl’s quest for change and the power of a single voice. Students in Grade K–2 can engage with the colourful illustrations and rhythmic narrative that strengthens as Nibi’s community rallies around her and joins in her chant. As a read-aloud, teachers may use this story to discuss basic human rights, equality, and the power of one voice as an advocate for change. Students may also have opportunities to reflect on how to work together to solve problems peacefully.
