Winter's Bone

Woodrell, Daniel
Ree Dolly is 16 and her life is complicated. Her mother is lost in silence to mental illness. She has two younger brothers to support but lives in grinding poverty. It's winter in the Ozarks. One morning she's told that her missing father has put up the family house to secure bail after being caught cooking amphetamines. If she's to keep the house, she needs to find her father, return him to the law, or prove that he's dead. There is a code of silence in the brutal Dolly clan, however.
