Gunslinger Girl

Ely, L.
This tale is set in the Wild West of a dystopian future, where a teenage gunslinger escapes an abusive life, but finds herself in a lawless and corrupt place. Her skill set serves her well to survive there, but she is soon put to the test and must grapple with her own morals and decide right from wrong, in situations where the difference between the two is obscure. This book lends itself well to class discussions and debates about justice, vengeance, and the morality of having criminals put to death, as well as issues in our society that parallel some of those in the novel.
