Painting, The

Cotter, C.
Annie finds a painting of a lighthouse hidden in the attic of their Toronto house, and when her mom is in a coma following a serious car accident, Annie mysteriously falls into the painting and lands at that lighthouse. She meets a girl her age named Claire who is sure Annie is the ghost of her younger sister who died in an accident. Claire tries to stop her artist-mother from showing paintings of her deceased sister and when Annie helps Claire she uncovers a family secret. This Canadian novel set in Ontario and the Maritimes is told in alternating chapters by the two girls, and is suited for a literature circle or book club choice, and raises issues of grief, forgiveness, identity, and family relationships.
