Journey, The

Sanna, F.
A young girl’s family lives in a country that is being ravaged by war and when her father is killed, her mother makes the difficult decision to take the children and flee, hoping to find a safe haven for them. The young girl recounts their journey and the difficulties, sadness, and frightening events they experience as they seek safety. This powerful and suspenseful picture book for grades 1-8 can be used as a read-aloud to spark discussion and critical thinking about human migration, refugees, impact of war, safety, family, turmoil, and survival. Dark and eye-catching illustrations add to the impact of this complex story. Caution is recommended as the story could be realistic to some students.
