Lotus & Feather

Jiang, J.-L.
Young Lotus is left mute and friendless following an illness and when a crane is injured, she nurses it back to health and names it Feather. The two form a remarkable bond, and Feather actually saves the lives of the village by warning of a flood. When the seasons change Lotus is saddened when Feather rejoins his flock to migrate, but Lotus is thrilled to see Feather and his flock return when spring arrives. This heartwarming, suspenseful picture book is based on a true event and is suitable as a read-aloud for primary grades to introduce ideas of identity, relationships, self-worth, social responsibility, conservation, endangered species, and connection/responsibility to the local environment.
