When the Fairy Queen and the fairies leave the forest for the Summer Country Wicked Nix is left behind and he decides to guard the forest until the Queen returns. Much to his dismay a human moves into the forest and Nix plays tricks to try and force the man to leave, but as he interacts with the human Nix realizes that he himself is not a fairy but a human stolen by the fairies and when the Queen returns and steals his human friend Sophie he must save her. This fantasy novel can be used as a read-aloud with younger students or independent read for older students and can spark discussion of identity, loneliness, betrayal, cruelty, loss, family, and conflicting emotions when one discovers the world isn’t what is seems.
