Really Good Brown Girl, A

Dumont, M.
This Canadian collection of poetry and short prose reflects the reality of growing up as a Metis woman in a small town in Saskatchewan. Dumont deals with the difficult issues of poverty, interracial relationships, effects of colonialism, and treatment of Aboriginal women, as well as her own struggles with self-hatred, fear, and anger. Dumont’s use of powerful language and imagery will provoke thought and deepen understanding of the Aboriginal experience. Suitable for students in grades 9-12, the resource will be at home in ELA, Social Studies, and First Peoples classes. Includes an introduction by Lee Maracle that links her experience growing up on the west coast with Dumont’s experiences.
