Radical Element, The

Spotswood, J.
This anthology of short historical fiction features female protagonists hindered by the social and gender conventions of their time. Set in the US in different geographical locations and different time periods – from the mid 1800’s to the 1980’s – each woman fights against a social expectation that she will not let define her or affect her future path. Focusing on themes of racism, homophobia, feminism, social activism, vigilantism, violence, gender identity, gender roles, and oppression, the stories can launch discussion of social issues past and present, spark research-based inquiries, and be used for units on social justice, racism, oppression, and overcoming adversity.
