Power of Harmony, The

Coates, J.
Nine-year-old Jennifer is having a bad time: while she dreams of being a famous singer when she is set to perform on stage she is so frightened that she faints, and, since her best friend moved away, she is often the victim of the class bullies. When a Melody, a First Nations girl, starts at her school, Jennifer finally finds a new friend who also loves music and understands what it is like to be on the outside, and the two work together to have a positive impact on their community. This Canadian novel deals with issues of stereotyping, racism, overcoming adversity, the residential school system, and the social aftermath of the Springhill, N.S. mine explosion, that span the Social Studies and ELA curricula.
