Scarlett and Donatella live with their abusive father and Scarlett dreams the entertainer Legend would visit their land and alleviate their problems. When her father sells her in marriage she hopes that will free them from his abuse but when Donatella accepts an invitation from Legend to visit Caraval, where he stages his performance game, Scarlett must follow and save her sister by playing and winning the game, despite the dangers she faces. This suspenseful novel deals with family, abusive relationships, love, and loss, allows students to think critically about the decisions the characters make, and is suitable for an independent or literature circle novel, or creative writing class.
