Akilak, a young Inuit girl, sets off on a great adventure to reach her uncle’s camp to gather food. Accompanied by the spirit of her grandmother, who takes the form of spirit animals, as she crosses the barrens lands of Nunavut, Akilak perseveres on her difficult journey and learns about trust, self-discovery, perspective, and the value of life lessons the Elders have passed down. This engaging picture book for grades 3-6 could be used for independent, class, or partner reading, and lends itself to discussions, journal writing, debate, art projects, and activities that encourage critical thinking. The appealing images authentically represent Inuit culture.
