Three Day Road

Boyden, Joseph
Three Day Road is a strong, beautifully crafted narrative of parallel stories: memories of a Cree-Ojibway medicine woman, Niska, and the experiences of her nephew, Xavier and his friend, Elijah in the trenches for some of the major battles of WWI. Both stories are memorable for the specific details presented. Niska shows Native lifestyles, values, and taboos extant at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. Xavier's story describes his childhood then the horror of war.
