Knights of the Hill Country

The novel is set around Hampton Green, a senior in a small Texas town and star of the football team. His friend, Blaine (the former team star), demands Hampton's loyalty, even as Hampton, himself, is pulled away with his growing attraction to an intelligent and unique girl. Hampton's maturation results in a climax where he must ultimately decide between two very different future paths.
