Choy, Wayson
The story of a Chinese Canadian family in the 1930s and '40s in Vancouver, the novel shows the immigrant experience in unflinching points of view from three different children narrators. As the characters struggle to bridge cultural and generational barriers, potential for classroom discussion is rich in terms of immigration, gender roles, war, prejudice, and the power of love and family. The novel will engage students from beginning to end.
