Hidden Roots

Bruchac, Joseph
This is a powerful story of family and identity which is written in an easy to follow style. Sonny, an eleven year old boy, tells of his experience as a Native American in 1954. Lonely and ignored by his peers he becomes close to his Uncle Louis. Every family has secrets, but Sonny's family has more than most. He lives in a troubled home with a quiet mom who is battered by a husband. The reasons for the father's anger and sadness are revealed near the end of the book.
