Boy Who Dared, The

Bartoletti, Susan Campbell
Set during WWII, this novel is based on the true story of Helmuth Hubener, killed at the age of seventeen, for sharing the pamphlets he produced and distributed. Readers learn also of many other German citizens who lost their lives for opposing what was happening. This story, a Young Reader's Choice contender for 2009-2010, will generate rich discussion and integrate well with Social Responsibility units in grades 6 and 7. Although the novel fits well with the Grade 9/10 Social Studies curriculum, the readability is Grade 6/7.
