Inconvenient Skin: Nayêhtâwan Wasakay

This timely Canadian poem, written by Shane Koyczan, translated into Cree, and illustrated by Indigenous artists and photographers, was written as a response to celebrations of Canada’s 150 years as a nation. It calls for accountability into the ways in which Indigenous people have been treated. Politically and racially charged, students can broaden their understandings of Indigenous perspectives, think critically about the past and present, and explore Residential Schools, Reconciliation, small pox blankets, genocide, loss of cultural identity, and missing and murdered Indigenous women.
