Kiviuq and the Bee Woman

McDermott, N.
As Inuit hunter Kiviuq is travelling home following an earlier encounter with Mermaids, he encounters Iguttarujuag – the Bee Woman. She welcomes him into her tent to rest but he soon discovers that she intends to cook him and eat him and it takes his spirit helpers – a bird and a polar bear – and his own powers to escape this treacherous creature. This Canadian picture book, for grades 4-7, tells of a great Inuit hero, highlights the Inuit tradition of oral storytelling, and focuses on the importance of the spirituality of the nature world and how it can help one overcome adversity. Detailed, evocative illustrations support the story.
