Shortly after an American-born Afghan boy learns that his mother is an illegal immigrant she is arrested by the police and twelve-year-old Jason, alone in New York City, sets out to find his aunt. When he has an accident and is hospitalized, he meets Max, who suffers from epilepsy and feels life is passing her by, and they escape from the hospital to finish Jason’s mission and on their adventure they discover a lot about their own identities. This exciting novel, written in simple language, is suitable as a whole class or a literature circle novel and to prompt discussions on multiculturalism, immigration, treatment of immigrants, epilepsy, self-identity, diversity, and cultural identity.
