Tanna's Owl

Qitsualik-Tinsley, R.
Tanna, an Inuit girl, is not thrilled when her father finds an abandoned baby owl that she finds weird and creepy looking, nor when she learns that she must care for it. It is hard work being responsible for Ukpik, as she names the owl, anticipating its needs, getting up early to catch its food, and cleaning up after it, but she resolutely does these chores. When summer ends she leaves for the school year and when she returns, Ukpik has learned to fly and left. This compelling, inspiring picture book with thoughtful visuals explores complex themes of setting goals, taking risks, personal growth, perseverance, and learning from and respecting nature, and reveals elements of Inuit culture.
