Hiawatha and the Peacemaker
Mohawk warrior Hiawatha is consumed by grief when he returns home to discover his wife and children have been killed in a battle led by a rival chief. He seeks revenge until he encounters the Great Peacekeeper who teaches him the Great Law that would see fighting end between their peoples. Hiawatha accompanies the Peacemaker to spread the message of peace and unite the five warring Nations and he also learns the power of forgiveness. This positive picture book can be used as a read-aloud to facilitate discussion of restitution, love, forgiveness, conflict resolution, and acting in peaceful ways, as well as to spark art projects, reflective writing, and response journals.
