Gutter Child

Richardson, J.
Elimina is a Gutter Child who has been raised on the Mainland as part of a social experiment. But those from the Gutter are not afforded the same luxuries as the Mainland’s colonizers. After her adoptive mother’s death, she soon faces the racism and discrimination that others like her must suffer, forced into a life of servitude to pay off their debt to society. Complex themes around colonialism, racism, and power are timely and engaging, and senior secondary students may connect to similar real-world situations, recognizing the injustices faced by the oppressed and gaining empathy. In the classroom, the novel can allow students to examine the biases in the world, connecting current events and news narratives, what influences them, and how biases are created.
