Ojiichan's Gift

Uegaki, C.
Mayumi feels strong emotions when her beloved, vibrant Ojiichan can no longer care for himself in his old age. The rock garden, or “karesansui,” he had—one that taught her so many things when she visited him—inspired her to create a similar small garden that he can take with him. A contemporary picture book that highlights the emotions a young girl must navigate watching her grandfather age, this is a story about family responsibility, ageing, multiculturalism, and connections to nature. Suitable for students across all elementary levels, this book lends itself well as a read-aloud and may invite discussions about feelings and emotions. The book’s unique watercolour illustrations could inspire various related art activities, and students may be encouraged to create their own calming “karesansui” garden.
