Just Under the Clouds

Sarno, M.
A contemporary novel that broaches important social issues such as homelessness, poverty, neurodiversity, and belonging, “Just Under the Clouds” is a story about twelve-year-old Cora and her family, including her neurodiverse younger sister, as they navigate loss, homelessness, and poverty. When Cora meets Sabina, the two lean on each other, finding friendship and acceptance, and allowing Cora to discover a significant tree that can help her feel rooted. Appropriate as a read-aloud, the novel may inspire class discussions around social justice themes and an exploration of identity and belonging. Intermediate-level students may be encouraged to share their experiences related to friendship and family, acknowledging everyone's strengths and abilities and how they can contribute to our identities.
