Clean Getaway
When biracial Scoob, who presents as black, is grounded by his father, his white grandmother invites him on a road trip as she wants to retrace a trip she and her black husband took in the 1960s. Scoob eagerly accepts and learns about segregation during the civil rights movement. As the journey continues, his grandmother’s true motive becomes clear and he learns the truth about her and the guilt she carries. This timely novel can foster discussion of social justice issues, multiculturalism, and cultural identity, and students will learn about the civil rights movement in the U.S, the challenges facing interracial families and marriages, and racial inequality.
