Elisapee and Her Baby Seagull

Mike, N.
When Elisapee’s father brings home a baby seagull, she helps take care of the bird and forms a special bond with the animal. But when it is time to set the seagull free, Elisapee struggles to say goodbye. Suitable for an early primary audience, this picture book highlights the connection we have with animals and gently introduces loss and grief while also sharing an authentic glimpse of what life is like in Nunavut. The story lends itself well as a classroom read-aloud. It may encourage students to reflect on loss or discuss animal rehabilitation and what that looks like in their communities. In addition, the Inuktitut terminology in the book may segue into discussions about local Indigenous words for animals.
