In Northern Ontario, Indigenous students had to leave their families and reserves to attend high school. Between 2000 and 2011 seven of these students died while living in Thunder Bay and the author uses their story and Thunder Bay as an example of Canada’s history of human rights violations against Indigenous people. This well-researched book reviews the legacy of colonialism and the deaths of the seven students, and brings the students to life, making them human and very real. Suitable for grades 10-12, it supports discussion of social justice and Truth and Reconciliation. Social considerations noted; a pre-warning and access to counsellors may be necessary for some students.
