Caterpillar Woman, The

Caterpillar Woman, The

Sammurtok, N.
This traditional Inuit transformation tale tells of Piujuq, who is transformed into a caterpillar due to an act of kindness she shows to a stranger. Her kindness also attracts Amaruq, who accepts her appearance and marries her. When Amaruq finds a drum and brings it home so Piujuq can dance and be happy, his act of kindness changes her back to a beautiful young woman. This Canadian picture book, for grades 2-7, will help students develop empathy, and learn about Aboriginal world views and engagement with the land, nature, and the outdoors. The illustrations support the plot of the story and add details about place that will enhance the reader’s understanding.
