Elatsoe

Little Badger, D.
Elatsoe, an Indigenous teen, lives in a world where magic exists, and magical creatures roam. She has special powers that she must use as she and her friend embark on a dangerous adventure to uncover the hidden truth behind her cousin’s tragic death. The novel’s interesting and well-developed characters help give readers insight into the prejudice and experiences of an Indigenous teen in a modern-day context. The story is interesting and is written at an appropriate level for independent reading or as a read-aloud. In the Grade 7–12 classroom, the novel may provide opportunities to discuss Indigenous cultural beliefs or different attitudes towards death and the afterlife, narrative practices, and ethical judgements.
