Ixchel, a young Mayan girl in Guatamala, wants to weave fabric like the fabric her mother weaves. Her mother can’t afford to spare any threads as she sells the fabric to support the family. Ixchel is not deterred and tries to weave grass and sheep’s wool without success, but then she spies a plethora of colourful plastic bags littering her community and weaves strips of them into a beautiful rainbow. This picture book demonstrates the challenges of poverty and shows how being resourceful, determined, and creative can help conquer adversity. Students can think creatively and critically about sustainability and resource management.
