Squawk

Squawk

Cole, M. G.
A short, one-act, three-character play, “Squawk” blends the history of colonialism in Canada with the concept of a video game in order to explore the modern experience of Indigenous youth in ministry care. The story follows Annie Runningbird, a young Indigenous girl ageing out of the foster care system, as she learns to navigate a world that she is not prepared to face. She must learn to reconcile with her past and cope with her present situation to win the game of reality that she is playing. Suitable in senior-level Drama, English, or Social Justice classes, the story lends itself well as an example for the study of character development and the contemporary experiences of First Peoples in Canada.
