Spirit Bear: Echoes of the Past

This story follows the fictional character Spirit Bear and his family and friends as they learn and share historical information related to past governments and the mistreatment of Canada’s First Nations people. In this book, Spirit Bear goes on a camping trip to Victoria, where he witnesses the removal of Sir John A. Macdonald’s statue, allowing readers to learn about and reflect on the unfair treatment of First Nations people early in Canada’s history. In a Grade 2–5 classroom, students may join Spirit Bear and family and friends to acknowledge the wrongs in history, allowing for classroom discussions and critical thinking activities that may help learn about the past to further reconciliation in Canada.
