Spirit Bear: Honouring Memories, Planting Dreams

Spirit Bear: Honouring Memories, Planting Dreams

Blackstock, C.
In this story, Spirit Bear meets up with his friend, a support reconciliation dog, endeavouring to create a heart garden in Ottawa. On their journey, they meet other students who share what they have learned about the historical events that led to the creation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). Students in Grade 2–5 may be encouraged to reflect on the TRC’s Calls to Action and participate in discussions and reflection activities about the fair treatment of children, human rights, discriminatory government policies, and sources of funding from the levels of government. Teachers may read the book aloud, and the story may prompt further inquiry on the topics mentioned within.
