A story based on historical events told by Spirit Bear, a fictional character, it brings to light current issues of First Nations children in Canada and the Reconciliation process taking place today. When Spirit Bear goes to Ottawa with his friend Cindy the Sheep, he attends the human rights tribunal and learns about Jordan’s Principle and Reconciliation. For students in Grade 2–5, this resource presents an Indigenous perspective that is timely and important for students’ understanding. In the classroom, teachers may choose to read the story out loud and initiate discussions about the fair treatment of children, human rights, discriminatory government policies, and funding sources from the government levels. It may also inspire students to advocate for a TRC Call to Action.
