Yang, K.
A love story about two teenagers who fall in love amidst life’s unpredictable challenges, this novel incorporates themes of racial discrimination, prejudice, stereotypes, privilege, sexism, and bullying throughout as it tells the tale of Serene and Lian and their life stories and struggles. Serene is the daughter of a famous fashion designer diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and Lian is a new immigrant to America from China who faces racial prejudice and discrimination. The story touches on issues teenagers in today’s world face, and secondary students may be prompted to engage in inquiry-based novel studies exploring cultural identity as well as personal and social responsibility. Teachers may use this book to support anti-racist education and decision-making lessons.
