Academic Language Acquisition
This course is for Levels 2 and 3 English Language Learners. Students will develop the academic vocabulary & skills needed to be successful in both English 10 & Social Studies 10. With a focus on the nuances of language found in various forms of text (written, visual, & digital) as well as how to incorporate those nuances & language into communication for various audiences (written, spoken & representations). Included in this course are the elements that make up Canadian Culture
Develop the academic vocabulary and skills needed to succeed academically in an Abbotsford secondary school. Understand how language works is a key to successful language development. Aid in the understanding of place through the integration of language development with cultural awareness. Develop cultural competency through the understanding of language and cultural nuances present in British Columbia and Canada.
Information is accessed for diverse purposes and from a variety of texts. Contextual academic vocabulary is essential for comprehension and to convey meaning in a variety of contexts. Effective communication includes understanding and demonstrating cultural nuances and norms. Effective communication includes exchanging ideas and viewpoints to share thinking. Producing writing for authentic audiences and academic purposes is important for comprehension.
This course is not intended to replace or negate the need for additional ELL support or supplemental service blocks. It is the intent of the course developers to offer this course in conjunction with other support and/or supplemental service blocks. It is recommend that ELL Level 1 students audit this course and then repeat this course for credit as an English Proficiency Level 2 or 3 student.
