To pursue & maintain a life-long artistic practice thru projects. Activities to identify & develop personal artistic themes. Technical abilities include color theory, drawing, painting, sculpture & graphic design. Analyze & critique historical artists & determine where their style fits in the current artistic context. Community-based experiential learning to connect students with art in the community & enabling them to visualize where their artistic style & philosophy fit in contemporary art.

Goals and Rationale

The main goal is to build the students technical ability and the self-awareness needed to be a successful and productive artist long-term. It enhances student growth and learning for them to prepare for and enter work into a group art show. Students work under the supervision of a visual art specialist teacher who is focused on challenging each student to grow as an artist and succeed in the visual arts (i.e. painting, sculpture, graphic design).

Big Ideas

An artist’s intention transforms materials into art. To make purposeful aesthetic choices artists need to identify personal artistic themes & goals. Refining artistic expression requires practice, resilience & creative risk taking. Perseverance & discipline are necessary to develop & maintain an artistic practice based on creative process. Aesthetic experiences can transform our perspective. Active participation in the visual arts is an essential element of culture & personal identity.

Aboriginal Worldviews and Perspectives: Learning requires exploration of ones identity.”: This course has a focus on developing as an individualized artist through reflection on historical and contemporary art as well as sketchbook and art projects that challenge students to develop personal artistic themes. These foci require students to explore and try to understand their identity in order to articulate what is important to them in their artistic practice.
