Bicycle Maintenance and Repair 11
To introduce students to fundamental techniques used in the repair & maintenance of bicycles. Proper use of the various bicycle tools required to repair & maintain bikes. Learn rules of cycling on the road, bike handling & traffic skills. Once bike safety, repair & maintenance are covered, students will participate in supervised bicycle rides in the community. If time permits, to build custom frames & service bikes & sell them within the community to address the entrepreneurial possibilities.
To meet the learning needs of students who thrive in hands-on learning environments. Students will learn basic bicycle mechanisms & maintenance; both transferable to a wide variety of lifelong learning. Students learn tool safety & usage, shop safety, and mechanics, problem-solving skills through diagnostic and bicycle repair. This course is developed in partnership with CAPS (Now TREK) Bicycles (Head Mechanic Ryan Gardiner) & the support of the City of Port Coquitlam (Chris Wilson).
Bicycle operation, service, and maintenance include consideration of social and environmental impacts. Tools and technologies can be adapted for specific purposes in regards to assembling, repairing, and maintaining bicycles. Personal service and maintenance interests require the evaluation and refinement of skills.
Aboriginal Worldviews and Perspectives: This course will look at Aboriginal Perspectives in relation to environmental awareness and sustainability best practices. Students will discuss different ways to reduce their carbon footprint and to help promote healthy and environmentally friendly lifestyles. Bicycle Maintenance allows students to be cognizant of their effects on our environment and surrounding community.
