This course is designed to enable students to study Chumash and its commentaries. The text is studied in Hebrew, and students will be able to read, translate and understand passages form the text. Students will be able to analyze the text and identify narratives within the Chumash. Also, students will be able to glean values and life lessons from the text.

Goals and Rationale

The Old Testament, or Chumash, forms the foundation of, among other religions, Judaism. Consequently, it is important to study this text, its narrative and its lessons in order to properly grasp the values and obligations that the Jewish religion bestows upon its followers. This course teaches students the reading skills needed to study the Chumash, and to also read an analyze later commentaries. Analyzing sections of the Chumash and discovering its themes allows students to recognize narratives
