English Language Development 10
To develop ELL students in the four main English language skills of reading, writing, listening & speaking. Focus on developing strategies needed to read, write & extract information successfully in English & addresses specific needs of students regarding language & culture. Students demonstrate growth in English language proficiency through oral, visual & simple written forms. Students identify & compare their own customs to Canadian culture & customs.
This course will enable students to develop a basic level of language proficiency in receptive and expressive language: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Develop an understanding and appreciation of cultural differences and similarities. Develop and preserve pride in their own heritage while developing language and skill sets in English. Develop and maintain a sense of sense of identity within the new culture and contexts.
The acquisition of English Language & understanding of Canadian culture is essential to participation in Canadian society. Family, friends & social connections are essential supports in the community. Activities & routines in the Canadian culture are ongoing learning processes. Participating in the immediate community & contributing to society enrich our lives. Work life practices are embedded in the community, home, school & society.
Aboriginal Worldviews and Perspectives: Declaration of First Peoples Principles of Learning: Support the development of self, family, community & others, while sharing stories, cultural ways of supporting & nourishing families & ceremonies. Learning is reflective, reflexive, holistic, experiential & relational. Learning is in history, memory & story of one’s culture & the world. Learning requires exploration of one’s identity & the country one lives in.
