English Language Development 10 A
The ELD10A course is one in which students develop their academic English. This is done in a sheltered environment which meets the specific cultural needs of ELLs. Students will grow their knowledge & skills for academic communication in English through explicit vocabulary, reading, writing, speaking & listening. ELD10A builds a bridge between students’ previous learning, their personal & social identities & relationships, & the new cultural setting within which they are now interacting.
ELLs have specific needs in the areas of language development & cultural adjustment. The change in their situation requires additional support to help them develop more increasingly complex, sophisticated & Independent School communication. The ELL sheltered classroom & ELL teacher provide the socio-emotional support for students’ late-entry into our education system. Research shows that ELLs who receive explicit instruction for their language development achieve greater long-term success.
