First Peoples Art
This course is designed to run in conjunction with First Peoples English 10 or as a standalone course. First Peoples Art 10 facilitates student exploration of topics related to culture, identity, values and world views by employing the “First People Principles of Learning”. Students will learn about the culture and history of the Osoyoos Indian Band, as well as other Indigenous cultures throughout North America through a series of field trips, guest speakers and integrated art projects.
This course is a blend of creative writing, journaling and art production. Through this course students will gain a greater understanding of local First Peoples history and living culture, as well as other First People’s populations across North America. This course includes regular outdoor excursions, field trips and guest speakers. Another component of this course is the important and on-going partnership with our schools Indigenous Support Workers, their input and participation is crucial.
Aboriginal Content, either through the First Peoples Principles of Learning or the reinterpretation of traditional & modern Aboriginal art forms Sharing / Identity - offers unique ways of exploring identity & sense of belonging Community- art can be used to foster community connections & bring people closer together. Nature - Art can be used to create deeper connections with nature. Through art we can explore ways to protect & conserve the natural world.
Throughout the course students will be engaged in a variety of activities which will encourage them to explore topics related to their own culture, families, traditions, world views and morals. The four main units covered in this course include: Identity, Story Telling, Legacies & Conservation. An important component of the course includes art projects which foster community connections where students will be asked to “give back” to their community & school.
