First Peoples cultures and ways of knowing through experiential learning and applications of key curricular competencies related to BC Home Economics and Culinary Arts curricula. Concepts include impacts of colonization in relation to food and textiles; First Peoples land stewardship; textile knowledge/practices; ethical & environmental issues in textile production/marketing; First Peoples worldviews, perspectives, knowledge/practices. Authentic knowledge from First Nations communities in Surrey
• Allow students with varying degrees of abilities to feel empowered to accomplish the new First Peoples graduation requirement • Enable students to gain a deeper understanding of place and their role within the community • Give students a sense of connectedness and a feeling of belonging • Allow students to show their creativity while understanding its place in history
• Experiences deepen our understanding of diverse, complex ideas of self, community and the environment. • Living sustainably supports the well-being of self, community, and the environment • Appreciating and experiencing connectedness to land, family, culture, and community
