This course is designed to give students at the Grade 10 level a detailed introduction to the world of journalism. While there is no prerequisite for this course, a background & interest in writing & other media are recommended in order to take advantage of the scaffolded nature of the material. Students in Journalism 10 will produce a variety of media-based projects & written pieces ranging from straight news to investigation, & help to maintain the school online news site.

The media is oversaturated with poorly written & researched news, much of which is so sensational or riddled with untruths as to render it fiction. The high school journalist is taught to take a BIG step back, build an understanding of the difference between misinformation & disinformation, & focus on what constitutes ethical information gathering & reporting in order to produce stories that are truthful & revealing. Essentially, this becomes their arsenal for balanced reporting in a battlefiel

How Journalism is defined in a contemporary context & how it is changing today. Responsible Journalism is as relevant today as it was 100 years ago. Searching for & communicating the truth requires intellectual commitment & personal initiative. Journalism can serve as an important catalyst in understanding the nature of Truth & Reconciliation. In a digital world saturated with misleading content, Journalism requires responsible investigative techniques.

The atmosphere of the classroom is intended to be one of questioning, discussion, & inquiry. News happens constantly so Journalism students should be encouraged to witness stories throughout the school & community within & beyond instructional time.
