Africville

When a young girl visits the site of Africville, a community established by Black refugees in Halifax in the 1800s, she imagines how the children lived, played, worked, and gathered with their families. The girl feels connected to the community and on one of her annual visits she finds her great-grandmother’s name engraved on a sundial. This acclaimed Canadian picture book is useful as a read-aloud to explore family and family history as well as the history of different peoples in Canada and how they have been treated through history. The simple text and detailed, colourful pictures clearly illustrate the experiences of the people who lived in Africville, a National Historic Site of Canada.
